What is a stormwater pond?
Stormwater ponds collect runoff before it enters our storm sewer system, which flows directly into creeks, lakes, and ultimately Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Properly functioning stormwater ponds increase storage capacity, decrease flooding, improve water quality, and create habitat for wildlife.
The Adopt-A-Pond program partners with citizens in unincorporated Pinellas County to improve the functionality of their stormwater ponds. Participants in the program will work together to improve their stormwater ponds by designing, implementing and maintaining a 5-year plan. Activities can include:
- Invasive plant removal
- Native plantings
- Pond cleanup events
- Neighborhood outreach and education
These activities can help to achieve improved water quality, habitat restoration, drainage improvement, flood protection, and increased environmental stewardship. Funding for this program comes from Pinellas County’s Surface Water Assessment.
