Pinellas County Youth Advisory
Committee
History
The Youth Advisory Committee, established in
2001, was developed as a vehicle for young
people to provide input and assistance to the
Pinellas County Commission. The
committee assists the commission by helping young
people identify their needs, to organize activities
that are beneficial to the community, to suggest
services they need as a group, and to become
active participants with their adult counterparts
in county programs.
Purpose
The Youth Advisory Committee is established for
the expressed purpose of giving a voice to
Pinellas County’s young people and to
allow them to participate in the government
process. Subsequently, by virtue of membership
in the Youth Advisory Committee, leadership
skills are developed and an awareness of social
responsibilities is encouraged.
Membership
Committee participants must be current students
in grades 9-12 and reside in Pinellas County. Members
should have a desire to assist in establishing
priorities for the future and becoming more
involved in the democratic process. Interested
members must submit an application for membership
and be appointed by the Pinellas County Board
of County Commissioners. Once approved,
a member serves on the committee until graduation
from high school.

Meetings
The committee meets on the second Tuesday of
each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Pinellas County
Courthouse, 315 Court Street, in a general
session. The committee provides regular
reports and updates to the Board of County
Commissioners at its monthly night
meeting. In addition, the committee plans
and participates in several community service
projects throughout the year.
Voter Education Bill
The Youth Advisory Committee has written proposed
legislation and has been an advocate for a
bill in the Florida legislature which provides
for voter education to high school seniors. The
bill encourages district school boards and
county supervisors of elections to provide
a program of voter education for high school
seniors and requires that the program be conducted
during school hours. The Youth Advisory
Committee has traveled to Tallahassee each
year to meet with Legislators and ask for their
support of the Voter Education Bill. Details
of the bill can be found at House
Bill 133 and Senate
Bill 110
