How to Fix Leaking Faucets

(for compression type faucets)

  1. Shut off the water supply to the faucet you are going to repair.
  2. Remove the cap on the top of the handle and remove exposed screw by turning counterclockwise.
  3. Pull off the handle.
  4. Remove the valve stem nut by turning counterclockwise.
  5. Remove screw from the base of the valve stem and replace worn washer with a new washer, making sure it's the right size.
  6. Reassemble the faucet and check to make sure it works properly and the leak has been repaired.

About Faucet Leaks...

A common source for leaks is the faucet. Whether in the Kitchen, bathtub or shower, a leaky faucet can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day. Leaking fuacets are usually caused bt worn washers or "O" rings. The leaky faucet repair that you keep putting off, can cost in water in water lost many times what the simple replacement parts will. The chart below shows just how much that "slow drip" can waste, assuming you have the standard 60psi (pounds per square inch) pressure in your pipe.
