Two-way traffic to be restored on Belcher Road
One lane in both directions on Belcher Road, between East Bay Drive and Ulmerton Road, is anticipated to be open by 5 p.m. today, and through traffic is expected to be maintained for the duration of the repair work. The damaged section of the 48-inch pipe has been removed and the replacement section has been installed. Water service has been restored to all customers via temporary water connections.

Broken water main repairs progressing
Crews worked most of the night to successfully remove the surrounding concrete to access the damaged 48-inch water main which ruptured last Thursday, December 23, on Belcher Road at 142nd Avenue North in Largo. Barring any unforeseen complications, it is expected that a 26-foot long section of replacement pipe will be fully installed and water service restored by the end of the week.

Officials are hopeful the repair can be completed by the end of the week, which means restoration of the roadway will not be completed until next week.

Boil water warning lifted
Water quality tests show water is safe to drink
The second round of water quality test samples have confirmed that the water is safe to drink and normal water use can resume immediately. This concludes the Mandatory Boil Water Warning implemented after last Thursday’s 48-inch water main break in Largo. The rescinding of the boil water warning does not apply to the 38 commercial/industrial properties in the vicinity of the break.

Full restoration of water service is expected by Tuesday, Dec. 28, following the 48-inch water main break in Largo this past Thursday. However, subsequent restoration work on the roadway is expected to take most of next week. The Mandatory Boil Water Warning remains in effect for South Pinellas County, which includes all Pinellas County Utilities customers south of Belleair Road.

Additional test samples being gathered this morning
The first round of water test samples has been completed, following Thursday’s 48-inch water main break in Largo. Additional test samples are being collected this morning (Saturday, Dec. 25) with results anticipated by mid morning on Sunday, Dec. 26.  Depending on what Sunday’s results show, utility officials say they may be able to reduce the geographical scope of the boil water advisory.

Water service remains off to limited service area
Due to the 48-inch water main break that occurred in Largo, near the intersection of 142nd Avenue North and Belcher Road on Dec. 23, it has been determined that approximately 50 parcels in the area bounded by Belleair Road on the north and Bryan Dairy Road on the south will be out of water until further notice. These parcels are primarily industrial/commercial. Officials are urging south county customers to limit their use of water.

Repair crews successfully isolated the damaged portion of the 48-inch water main overnight. By reducing the water loss and opening an intertie connection with the City of St. Petersburg’s water distribution system, water pressure is starting to return to normal. The Mandatory Boil Water Warning issued for South Pinellas County, including all Pinellas County Utilities customers south of Belleair Road, remains in effect. Anyone who has experienced low pressure or no water, should also follow boil water precautions.

Due to a 48-inch water main break in Largo, a Mandatory Boil Water Warning has been issued for South Pinellas County, which includes all Pinellas County Utilities customers south of Belleair Road. Any customers north of Belleair Road who have experienced low pressure or no water, should also follow boil water precautions once service has been restored. Repair crews are working to maintain water pressure with water routed from other points in the distribution system.

Water main break in Largo
A 48-inch water main has ruptured near the intersection of Belcher Road and 142nd Avenue North in Largo. Belcher Road has been closed to traffic between East Bay Drive and Ulmerton Road. Response crews are onsite and working to isolate the damaged section of pipe. Once isolated, residents should see an improvement in water pressure. Residents are asked to temporarily reduce any non-essential water use. There have been reports of low water pressure from residents in Largo, Seminole, Pinellas Park and from the beach communities.

North Pinellas County reclaimed water system returning to full operation

It was a seamless transition for customers at Pinellas County’s Solid Waste Operations. The facility now accepts Visa and MasterCard payments and instead of a clipboard with three copies of a ticket to sign, drivers are handed an electronic signature pad.

Residents urged to check their irrigation systems
Phase I water shortage effective December 1
The Southwest Florida Water Management District declared a Phase I water shortage for the District’s entire 16-county area, including Pinellas County, beginning December 1. The Phase I alert is intended to raise public awareness of dry conditions. Residents are asked to check their irrigation systems to ensure they are working properly. There are no changes to watering days or times in a Phase 1 water shortage.

Changes in Pinellas County watering restrictions
New two-day-per-week schedule conforms to District Governing Board restrictions
Residents are now permitted to water their yards two days per week, in conformity with the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board. This is permissible regardless of the water source. Previously, residents using well, lake, or pond water could water twice a week, but residents using county drinking water were limited to once a week.

Reduced reclaimed water availability
Changes scheduled to begin Oct. 25, 2010
To alleviate the risk of running out of reclaimed water, action is being taken to reduce daily system demands. Beginning Monday, Oct. 25, at 12:01 a.m., north county reclaimed water customers will have reclaimed water available three days per week for irrigation. Customers south of Alderman Road and west of US 19 North will have reclaimed water available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 12:00 a.m. until midnight. Customers in all other north County service areas will have reclaimed water available on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, also in 24-hour intervals beginning at 12:00 a.m. On Mondays, the reclaimed water system will be down for maintenance and pond recovery.

Voluntary reduction requested
To alleviate the risk of running out of reclaimed water, Pinellas County Utilities is appealing to North County reclaimed water customers to voluntarily limit irrigation immediately. The last few weeks of dry weather and increased reclaimed water use have depleted the available supply of reclaimed water. It is forecasted that the current dry weather will last for an extended period of time. If current dry conditions continue, officials will have to implement mandatory seasonal restrictions in order to balance supply with demand. Seasonal reclaimed water restrictions would limit reclaimed water availability to three days per week based on the property address.

The seasonal reclaimed watering restrictions for lawn and landscape irrigation, scheduled to start October 1, 2010, have been suspended by the director of Pinellas County Utilities. Because of uncharacteristic seasonal rainfall and the reduced demand on reclaimed water supplies at the William E. Dunn and South Cross Water Reclamation facilities, irrigation of established lawns and landscaping with reclaimed water will not be limited to three days a week. However, customers are reminded that the three-day-per-week watering schedule is sufficient to maintain a healthy lawn.

Alternate Water Source Rebates to End
Applications must be received by September 20
The Pinellas County Utilities rebate program for alternate sources of irrigation is drawing to a close. Under the 12-year-old program, rebates were available for up to 50 percent of the installation cost (up to $300) for a shallow well, deep well, or surface water withdrawal system (such as a lake, pond, or canal) for irrigation.

Precautionary Boil Water Notice Rescinded
Water is safe to drink
A precautionary boil water notice issued on Tuesday, April 6, has been rescinded, and those impacted will be notified today. The precautionary action was taken after a 12-inch water main was hit by a contractor. Two consecutive bacteriological results, upstream and downstream of the repair, have confirmed that the water is safe to drink and that normal water use can resume immediately. The boil water notice impacted approximately 35 addresses in the immediate vicinity of U.S. 19 and Alderman Road.
