The new phone books are coming! Pinellas County Utilities is encouraging all residents to recycle their old phone books instead of trashing them.

There are many convenient options for recycling phone books in Pinellas County. Eight cities offer curbside recycling (Belleair, Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Oldsmar, Redington Beach, Safety Harbor, and Seminole). Residents can also use one of the 40 drop-off locations around the county. A complete listing of drop-off sites is available at www.pinellascounty.org/utilities/PDF/phone-book-sites.pdf.

Pinellas residents discard over two million phone books annually. Phone books can be recycled into new products such as newspaper, insulation, or paper towels. Recycling conserves valuable landfill space, saves natural resources, and reduces pollution.

You can cut waste if you are getting more phone books than you need. At home, you probably don’t need multiple sets of books, which is what you will receive if you have more than one phone line. At work, you can share phone books with co-workers instead of everyone getting a set. Another option is to use online listings such as www.superpages.com instead of a hard copy. You can sign up to stop receiving phone books at www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org.
