Reclaimed Water Conservation Urgently Needed
Voluntary Reduction Requested

May 16, 2008

To alleviate the risk of running out of reclaimed water, Pinellas County Utilities is appealing to North County reclaimed water customers to voluntarily limit irrigation immediately. Below average rainfall in the area continues to stress the available supply of reclaimed water. If current drought conditions continue, officials will have to implement zone control in order for the system to recover. This would limit reclaimed water availability to three days per week.

The following suggestions can help you conserve reclaimed water and still maintain a healthy lawn:

  • Limit irrigation to alternate days of the week, based upon address: Odd numbered addresses to irrigate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; Even numbered addresses to irrigate on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday;
  • Generally, irrigate at a rate of approximately 1 inch to 1½ inches per week.
  • Do not irrigate during the hottest part of the day (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) when irrigation is least effective. High temperatures lead to excessive evaporation and the potential for lawn scalding.
  • Those brown spots on your lawn could be due to insect damage. Over watering can make this situation worse.
  • Make sure your sprinklers water your lawn, not your driveway, road or sidewalk.

Pinellas County Utilities is trying to prevent temporarily shutting down the North County Reclaimed Water System. Please help conserve our valuable reclaimed water resource by irrigating wisely and efficiently.

If you would like additional information on how to maintain a healthy lawn, please contact Pinellas County Utilities at 464-4000, and tell the representative, “I want a healthy lawn,” or visit www.pinellascounty.org/utilities
