Largo, Fla—The follow-up round of sampling today (Saturday, May 19, 2007) returned with three of the four samples testing safe in the area affected by the Wednesday’s wastewater spill. The three passing samples were taken from the Intercoastal waterway. The lone sample with elevated levels of fecal coliform was taken from stormwater retention.

Signs and water-use restrictions remain only in the area where levels have yet to return to normal. Water quality monitoring continues in the area. Utilities officials remind citizens that coliform bacteria are unable to survive in a saltwater environment. Sunlight and naturally occurring soil bacteria are also excellent at neutralizing and breaking down these organisms.
