Calling All Phone Books
Please Recycle Old Phone Books

May 21, 2007

image of phone books in a recycling binNew phone books will be appearing on your doorstep soon! What will you do with your old books? Pinellas County Utilities is encouraging all residents to recycle their old phone books instead of trashing them.

Pinellas County Utilities has partnered with local cities and SP Recycling Corporation on a Phone Book Recycling Campaign, which includes both curbside and drop-off options. Residents with curbside collection in Belleair, Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Oldsmar, and Redington Beach can put phone books in their curbside recycling bin. Other residents can go to one of the 40 convenient drop-off locations around the county. Most drop-off sites have bins labeled “phone books;” or if not, residents should put phone books in the “mixed paper” or “magazines” bins (not in the “newspaper” bin).

Pinellas residents discard over two million phone books annually. Phone books can be recycled into new paper products such as newsprint. Recycling conserves valuable landfill space, saves natural resources, and reduces pollution.

You can cut waste if you are getting more phone books than you need. At home, you probably don’t need multiple sets of books, which is what you will receive if you
have more than one phone line. At work, you can share phone books with co-workers instead of everyone getting a set. Another option is to use online listings such as www.superpages.com. To reduce the number of phone books delivered to your office or house this year, call Verizon at 1-800-888-8448 or Yellow Book at 1-800-929-3556.

A complete list of phone book recycling sites is available at www.pinellascounty.org/utilities/getridofit/phone_book_recycling.pdf Adobe Acrobat Reader file or call (727) 464-7500.
