UPDATE
Testing Continues in Largo
May 18, 2007
Largo, Fla— Water testing will continue over the weekend in the area affected by the wastewater spill on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. The first round of sampling returned with two of the four samples showing elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria. Repeat testing is required to determine whether this is spill-related or due to typical background levels of the location.
In the meantime, residents are urged to observe the temporary restrictions posted on signs in the affected area. The water should be treated as unsuitable for swimming, drinking and irrigation. Fishing should be done on a catch-and-release basis only. Utilities officials remind citizens that coliform bacteria are unable to survive in a saltwater environment. Sunlight and naturally occurring soil bacteria are also excellent at neutralizing and breaking down these organisms.
