Pinellas County Commissioners Proclaim
April as Water Conservation Month
April 13, 2007
On April 3, 2007, the Pinellas County Board Of County Commissioners proclaimed April as “Water Conservation Month”. Through Pinellas County Utilities’ diligent public outreach efforts, educational initiatives and innovative incentive programs, Pinellas County citizens have reduced personal potable (drinking) water daily consumption from 153 gallons per person per day in 1990 to 89 gallons in 2007.
According to Pick Talley, Director of Pinellas County Utilities, “Responsible management and citizen participation are vital in the conservation and protection of our water resources”.
Through a speaker’s bureau, brochures, and educational awareness campaigns such as the “Healthy Lawn” program, Pinellas County Utilities encourages citizens to conserve drinking water indoors as well as outdoors. The “Healthy Lawn” educational initiative highlights four key areas to help establish and sustain a water efficient lawn and landscape. These areas include: irrigating responsibly, establishing a deep, drought-tolerant root system, using fertilizer and mulch properly and planting the right plant in the right place.
The Ultra Low Flow Toilet (ULFT) and Alternate Water Sources (AWS) rebate programs are part of the ongoing efforts to ensure the continued success of preserving our precious water resources. The ULFT rebate program offers up to $100 for each high flow toilet replaced by an ultra low flow toilet to single family, multiple-family, and commercial customers. The AWS rebate program offers up to $300 for the installation of an alternate water source for irrigation (i.e. shallow well, deep irrigation well, surface water withdrawal system).
