CONTACT INFORMATION: Pinellas Beaches Add Recycling BinsRecycle Empty Cans and Bottles: First Wave of the Beach Recycling Pilot ProjectApril 20, 2006
Beach-goers can ensure the recycling project’s success by locating the recycling containers and using them to dispose of used aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Residents and visitors who go to the beach are pretty good about picking up their trash and leaving the beach as clean as they found it. Giving them a convenient recycling option enhances their efforts to clean up, preserve, and enjoy a sustainable environment.

As
you leave the beach, where’s the best place to put
your empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles? They belong
in the recycling bin! Now beach-goers in the public beach
access areas of Redington Shores Beach, St. Pete Beach, and
Treasure Island Beach have access to recycling bins that
sit beside selected trash cans. The Beach Recycling Pilot
project team installed the bins as a first step toward the
goal of recycling at all public beach access points.
The
Beach Recycling Pilot Project started in early March and
will continue for at least three months. It includes waste
composition studies, recyclables and waste collection monitoring,
and a survey of beach visitors. The project team includes
members from Pinellas County Parks & Recreation; Pinellas
County Utilities; the Cities of Redington Shores, St. Pete
Beach, and Treasure Island; Waste Management Inc.; and Kessler
Consulting Inc. The pilot is funded by the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection.
