Pinellas County Utilities offers valuable environmental programs through its Department of Solid Waste Operations. Every year, more than two million tons of municipal solid waste is generated in Pinellas County.

To meet the challenge of managing Pinellas County’s waste, an integrated approach is used:

  1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Help identify, coordinate, and promote opportunities for citizens to practice the "3 R’s" (reduce, reuse, recycle) to minimize the amount of waste generated in our community. Public outreach and planning is also coordinated with the "Pinellas Partners in Recycling" – the Recycling Subcommittee of the Solid Waste Technical Management Committee (TMC).
  2. Waste to Energy (WTE): Incineration reduces the volume of waste to be landfilled by 90% and turns waste to energy by producing electricity for up to 45,000 households. Metals are recovered from the ash and recycled.
  3. Landfill: Items that cannot be incinerated are placed in the sanitary landfill along with ash from the WTE. When waste received exceeds capacity at the WTE, material is diverted to the landfill.

Solid Waste Mission
The mission of Pinellas County Utilities Solid Waste Operations is to provide safe, competitive and environmentally sound integrated solid waste services to all citizens of Pinellas County. These services emphasize public awareness and communication so our citizens can make educated choices concerning proper management of their solid waste.
