High Adventure History Camps at Heritage Village

Location: Heritage Village, 11909 125th Street North, Largo

For: Children ages 5 to 11
Hours & Days: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday
Cost: $150 per week. Pinellas County Historical members $125 per week. Register for one session or all four.
Before and After Care: Available for an additional charge per week.

Session 1: June 16 through June 20, Saddle Up! On the Palmetto Trail

  • Wild lariat wrangling
  • Split rail fence building
  • Set up your chuck wagon jamboree
  • Make a branded satchel

Session 2: June 23 through June 27, Be a Star under the Big Top

  • Earn your keys to the village
  • Knock Knock, Who’s There? (create a doorknocker for your room)
  • Cobwebs and Cattails: Listen to Florida folk tales
  • Take a ride in the Doodlebug truck

Session 3: July 7 through July 11, Creaky Stairs and Steps to Mend

  • Build a Victorian letter box
  • Plumbing around the outhouse
  • Fanciful heirloom stitching
  • Dumpling stew we’ll do

Session 4: July 14 through July 18, Swamp Dog Days of Fun!

  • Set sail the hay bail boat
  • Hook, line and sinker
  • Make a compass rose
  • Tiki Soaky Island adventures

Take a trip to the past this summer and get a fun hands-on experience during one or more High Adventure History Camps. Four separate camps begin Monday, June 16, and end Friday, July 18. Set up a chuck wagon jamboree, clown around with a mad cap fire brigade, build a Victorian letter box, set sail in a hay bail boat and much more. Each camp offers something new to see, do and share at Heritage Village. Pre-registration is required by phone or email.

Herpetology Camp at Brooker Creek Preserve

Location: Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs

For: Students entering 2nd to 6th grades; ages 7 to 11
Date: August 4 through August 8, Monday through Friday
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: $125 per camper - registration form - Sorry, this class is full

Campers explore the fascinating world of amphibians and reptiles side-by-side with George Heinrich, a professional herpetologist and owner of Heinrich Ecological Services. Through up-close encounters with a variety of animals such as gopher tortoises, frogs, lizards and snakes, campers learn about amphibian and reptile ecology and conservation at this Herpetology Camp. Each session is limited to 30 campers, and registration is on a first-come basis.

Junior Kayak Camp at Weedon Island Preserve

Location: Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg

For: Students entering 4th, 5th or 6th grade in August 2008
Date: June 16, 17, 19 and 20, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Hours: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Cost: $140 per camper.

Paddle into adventure at Weedon Island Preserve in June. This Junior Kayak Camp combines education with fun while teaching the fundamentals of kayaking, safety and teamwork. Campers become comfortable out in the water and learn how to understand factors like currents and wind to determine safety. Weedon Island offers the perfect natural setting. Each session is limited to 12 campers, and registration is on a first-come basis. Sweetwater Kayak, a vendor at Weedon Island Preserve, is conducting the camp and handling registration.

Herpetology Camp at Weedon Island Preserve

Venture into the beautiful waterscape of Weedon Island Preserve in a kayak in July. This Senior Kayak Camp combines education with fun while teaching kayaking, safety and teamwork. Previous training in kayaking isn’t necessary. Weedon Island offers the perfect natural setting. Each session is limited to 12 campers, and registration is on a first-come basis. Sweetwater Kayak, a vendor at Weedon Island Preserve, is conducting the camp and handling registration.
