The Traffic Engineering & Transportation Safety Division's focus is to provide safe, efficient travel on roads throughout Pinellas County. The Division staff works interactively with municipalities in Pinellas County to develop solutions to traffic safety issues, and offer advice and support. The Division administers numerous programs including the Residential Traffic Management Program (RTM), the Residential Street Lighting Districts (SLD) Program, complaint investigations, traffic accident data analyses, and volume, speed and engineering studies.

In addition, Traffic Engineering & Transportation Safety is included in the review process for all subdivisions, site plans, and right-of-way use permits that are submitted to Pinellas County. Staff also participates in the Project Production Teams for various CIP projects.

The Signing and Pavement Marking Operations section is responsible for sign manufacturing, and for sign, roadway striping, symbols and pavement markings installation and maintenance, 24 hours-a-day and seven days a week.

The Engineering & Safety section evaluates requests for new or additional traffic control devices, performs sight distance evaluations, coordinates with school transportation personnel and School Crossing Guards regarding pedestrian facilities, and addresses complaints/concerns from citizens.

Staff also conducts traffic studies and investigations to improve safety and traffic circulation for the motoring public. Various types of traffic data are collected and analyzed in the performance of these studies. These include turning movement counts, traffic volume counts, delay studies, gap studies, spot speed studies, and crash data analyses.
