EMS professionals in Pinellas County utilize a variety of emergency vehicles in the performance of their duties. Many fire departments utilize fire engines as double-duty EMS vehicles as well. ALS vehicles have paramedics on board and a full array of advanced life support medical equipment.
Sunstar Paramedic Ambulances
- ALS—Advanced Life Support
- The most familiar vehicle in the Sunstar fleet, these trucks carry a two-person crew: EMT and paramedic.
- Up to 64 ambulances may be deployed around Pinellas County depending on historic need.
- Average response time is 6:30 countywide.
Sunstar Critical Care Transport
- Carries a three-person crew: EMT, paramedic and emergency care nurse.
- Provides highly specialized inter-facility transport services and 9-1-1 scene responses to patients who need care beyond the scope of a paramedic through a transport team approach.
ALS Engine
- Carries a three- or four-person crew, with one paramedic position funded by the EMS Authority.
- Crews are cross-trained for the dual role of responding to both EMS and fire emergencies.
- Average response time for fire department first responders is 4:30 countywide.
ALS Squads/Ladder Truck
- Carries three- or four-person crew with one paramedic position funded by the EMS Authority.
- Crews are cross-trained for the dual role of responding to both EMS and fire emergencies.
ALS Fire/Rescue Trucks
- Carry two paramedics with both positions funded by the EMS Authority.
- Typically used in areas with a high volume of EMS activity.
- Can perform hospital transport if necessary.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Crews are EMTs who perform ventilation, CPR, administer oxygen and perform basic trauma care such as bandaging and splinting.
