Tierra Verde Community Overlay Information
On December 19, 2007, the Pinellas County Planning Department mailed a proposal to establish a Community Overlay for the Tierra Verde community to all property owners in Tierra Verde. The packet mailed included a map identifying the boundary of the Tierra Verde community and a proposed Vision, objectives and policies that would be adopted as part of the Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan if there was sufficient support from property owners in Tierra Verde. The packet also included a self-addressed stamped postcard by which property owners could vote either "Yes" or "No" on whether they support the proposed Community Overlay.
At the December 3, 2007 public meeting in Tierra Verde, there was a unanimous decision by those in attendance to submit the Community Overlay proposal (as modified at the public meeting) to Tierra Verde property owners for a vote to determine the level of support for moving forward. It was understood that at least 60 percent of the returned postcards would need to support the proposal in order for the Tierra Verde Commmunity Overlay to be presented to the Board of County Commissioners for action.
A total of 2,228 packets were mailed to property owners in Tierra Verde. As of Monday, January 28, 2008, the results of the voting are as follows:
Yes (support the proposed Community Overlay) 877 (84.7%)
No (do not support the proposed Overlay) 159 (15.3%)
Total votes (representing 46.5% of mailed packets) 1,036
Since more than 60 percent of those property owners who voted supported the proposed Tierra Verde Community Overlay, County staff prepared a proposed amendment to the Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan that incorporated the Tierra Verde Community Overlay as part of the Plan. This proposal was included in the Comprehensive Plan amendment package that the Board adopted on March 18, 2008. The amendment package is now awaiting a compliance finding by the Florida Department of Community Affairs.
