Patrol Basics for Rangers
General:
Before operating a vehicle/cart/bike do the
circle of safety. Also
check equipment such as tools, first aid,
defibrillator etc.

Check intersections for working crossing
signals and signage.

Check
Trail for deficiencies according to the
Trail Inspection Checklist
-
Check for any graffiti and report it to
the appropriate agency
-
Check outstanding/pending maintenance work
orders.

Do daily count (take count for one hour)
-
Check calendar for special events scheduled
-
Check all bridges and overpasses
(check stairways)
-
Look for anything
out of the ordinary.

Advise visitors
on safe
practices (intersection
crossing,
helmet
wearing
etc.) while using
Parks
and Trails.
Weekends
-
Secure
any safety situation until they can
be corrected properly.
Personal conduct:
-
Uniforms are worn when working and performing
duties (see Park Uniform Policy).

Radios, tape and CD players are not to be used
while on duty.

Consuming alcoholic substances immediately
prior to and during work is
prohibited. The County operates under a Zero Tolerance Drug
Free Program.

Inappropriate language is prohibited.
-
Conducting personal business while working
is prohibited.
Bicycle Patrols:
Bicycles are fitted properly to the ranger,
checked/cleaned daily, and equipped for Patrols.

Brakes work properly

Handle bars are tight

Cables are in working order

Crank is not loose

General condition of bicycle
Fitting the Bicycle
The bicycle should be the correct and should
be comfortable.

Bicycle
Seat: When sitting back on the seat
in normal riding position, there should
be a slight bend in your knee when the pedal is
at lowest position.

Handle
Bars: The handlebars should be adjusted
so rider leans slightly forward.

Helmet: The helmet is required and worn centered
on the head (not pushed back). It should
fit snugly and the strap adjusted so one finger
fits between the strap and chin.

Aid: Band-aids, Compress bandage,
Sting packet, Rubber gloves

Repair: Bike tool kit, Plastic
tie straps, Tire pump or
compressed air bottle

Riding Tips
-
Stretch
before and after each ride.

Drink plenty of water before you start your
ride and drink at regular intervals during
your ride.

Your pace should be steady.
-
Take frequent breaks
-
Be sure to use sun block (recommended 15 SPF
or above).
