July 1, 2008– County Commissioners Meeting Update
The following items were discussed during the Tuesday, July 1, Board of County Commissioners’ meeting.
From Toytown to The Parks of Pinellas
Item #35 - APPROVED
The commission approved the agreement for the sale of the Toytown Historic Landfill. The Florida Gateway Development, LLC. proposal combines the purchase of an adjacent parcel to create the nearly 300-acre mixed-use development, Parks of Pinellas. The redevelopment project would include 2 million square feet of office space, 1.5 million square feet of retail, 375 hotel rooms with 50,000 square feet of meeting/convention space and a 2,113-unit residential village, with workforce housing. The plan also creates 70 acres of new parks and recreation facilities. The developers will take over maintenance of the landfill closure permit.

How many desks will we need this year?
Item # 25 - APPROVED
How many students can a school expect when the doors open for a new year? Up to this point, it’s been a guessing game for the state’s school districts, an especially challenging one in the areas of the state that are experiencing rapid growth. Last year, the state Legislature passed a law to require counties to develop a Public School Concurrency Plan. In Pinellas, a Web-based program will make developers’ plans available to governmental jurisdictions, enabling schools to prepare for an influx of students well in advance of the first-day school bells. This item approves the advertisement for a public hearing.

Historical letters donated
Presentation
In 1868, Daniel McMullen and his wife Margaret Ann built a home in an area of Pinellas County that later became Rosery Road near East Bay Drive in Largo. The McMullen family occupied this home for almost 125 years. In 1992, Nancy McLaughlin and her family donated the home to Heritage Village and she moved to Jay, Fla. to join her daughter, Peggy Miller. She brought family letters that had been safeguarded by three generations of McMullen women. Peggy Miller recently donated these letters to Heritage Village. At the meeting, Ellen Babb of Heritage Village officially accepted the historical collection for the museum. Peggy Miller was represented by great grandchildren of Daniel and Margaret Ann McMullen: Nita Crawford and Dottie Bouchard, and her son Ray Bouchard.
