  Status of Homelessness

State of Florida:

  • There are 76,675 homeless people in Florida and beds/programs for only 12 percent of them.
  • Eighty-three percent of the jobs with the most growth in Florida pay less than the living wage. Fifty-two percent of such jobs in Florida pay less than half the living wage.

Pinellas County:

  • On any given night, there are more than 4,000 homeless people in our community. These are men, women, and children who, for whatever reason, have no place to live.
    • 30% suffer from alcohol/drug abuse
    • 32% suffer from mental illness
    • 10% victims of domestic violence

While counting the homeless population is a complex process and difficult to accomplish with limited resources, the annual survey conducted on January 26, 2004 by the Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless found 4,000 people to be homeless on this date using HUD’s definition of homelessness. Of these, 840 were children under the age of 18.
