Saturdays, September 13, October 11, November 8 and Saturday, December 6
10 a.m. – 1 p.m
Living the life of the Florida pioneers. Living history interpreter, Wendy Knott-Comer, will take on the role of past pioneers and transform your modern adult day into the times of the piney wood with hands on sessions of the Pinellas past.
September 13…Elbow Grease and Homey Pastimes - Visit with Elizabeth McMullen and learn what it took to be a housewife in the 1860s. Pitch in to spiff up the cabin, polish the good silver, wash clothes the old fashioned way and sew a quilted “hot pad” for your kitchen.
October 11…Living off the Land - We will start with a tour of a “grove house.” Then, try your hand at building a “stack” fence, plowing a garden plot with a people powered cultivator, cook up some herb jelly and enjoy a taste of sorbet you churn yourself.
November 8…Entwined in History - Pay a call to the Lowe farm to gain knowledge of ranching in early Florida. Take a crack at roping a steer, produce rope the way the ranchers did, then fashion a palmetto fiber rope similar to the ones produced by Florida Native Americans.
December 6…Set a Course for Adventure - Mrs. Boyer, wife of fisherman and entrepreneur Joshua Boyer, will share her knowledge of the young fishing industry in 1870’s Pinellas County. Then play a rousing game of “Bail the Boat,” become skilled at cast netting and create a pine needle coaster.
