Summer Camp Schedule

June 4-8

Wildlands Investigators (three sessions offered)
Campers investigate Brooker Creek Preserve and surrounding areas by hiking, canoeing and wading through the wildlands. Using scientists’ tools and techniques, campers sample for insects in the creek, observe wildlife in the heart of the swamp, and examine the immediate effects of wildfire on the forest floor. This is a great way for campers to gain a glimpse into the wild side of Pinellas County. Who should attend: Students entering 6th through 8th grade in August 2007 and are between the ages of 11 - 12 are encouraged to attend.  Registration: limited to 20 campers. Before Camp Care: Yes.

Island Explorers (three sessions offered)
This camp explores the interactions between humans and their environment through time in the coastal ecosystems of Pinellas County. Campers hike, wade and canoe through various coastal environments of Weedon Island Preserve. A trip to Shell Key Preserve to study a barrier island system is also part of this program. Participants play the roles of marine biologist, ecologist and archaeologist throughout this fun-filled week. Who should attend: Campers entering 6th through 8th grades in August 2007. Wild About Art (offered twice)
This camp is for those who enjoy art and music in an outdoor setting. Campers learn to see nature in new ways through a variety of artistic activities from sculpture to photography and music.  Combining the excitement of scientific discovery with the fun of creative expression allows campers to explore connections in the natural world. Who should attend: Campers entering 6th through 8th grades in August 2007 and are between the ages of 11 - 13 are encouraged to attend. Registration: limited to 20 campers and is on a first-come basis. Herpetology Camp (offered twice)
This week-long camp has the inquisitive child in mind. Campers explore the fascinating world of amphibians and reptiles side-by-side with herpetologist George Heinrich. Through up-close encounters with a variety of animals, such as gopher tortoises, frogs, lizards, and snakes, campers learn about amphibian and reptile ecology and conservation. Who should attend: Students entering 2nd through 6th grades in August 2007 and are between the ages of 7 - 11are encouraged to apply. Registration: limited to 30 campers. Before Camp Care: Yes.

Watershed Explorers
This innovative camp is for high school students who want to make a difference in their community. Campers explore the Brooker Creek Watershed by hiking, canoeing and kayaking its headwaters and numerous lakes all the way to Tampa Bay. While discovering the fascinating wildlife and diverse human populations that call this area home, campers gain a deeper understanding of the watershed. Opportunities to meet various environmental professionals and work with citizens who are concerned about the watershed’s health are included. Best of all, campers discuss and implement ideas that address local conservation concerns.Who should attend: students entering 9th through 12th grade and are between the ages of 14 - 17 are encouraged to apply.  Registration: limited to 12 campers. Before Camp Care: No.

Registration
Camp fees are $125/week/camper.  Each camp session runs from Monday through Friday.  Registration is on a first-come basis.  Call the Centers today to register or receive additional information.

Scholarships
The Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve, Inc. and the Friends of Weedon Island, Inc. are sponsoring scholarships for qualified students. Scholarship applications must be returned no later than May 15, 2007, and recipients will be selected based on economic need. Contact the Centers for more information and to receive a scholarship application.
