Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held each Saturday of the month. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Please register by 2:00 pm on the Friday prior to the hike of your choice. Free. All ages welcome - children younger than 6 may find this hike challenging.

Heart’s Breath Flute Extravaganza 2010

Native American-Style Flute Performers

Join us for a fun-filled celebration at the Heart’s Breath Flute Extravaganza 2010.  This 7th annual celebration features the art and music of the Native American culture, sure to captivate visitors of all ages.  Participate in a silent auction or shop for Native American-themed items and hand-made flutes.  Learn the basics of indigenous flute playing through a demonstration and instruction by talented flutists.  Register for the flute class by calling (727) 453-6500. The event and class are free and open to the public.  Recommended for all ages.

Wee-time at Weedon: What Lives in a Shell?

This program is designed to introduce pre-school children to the wonders of the natural and cultural world. Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, children are treated to a variety of stories and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. This book presents What Lives in a Shell? by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld. Children learn that a shell is a home to many different types of animals. Pre-registration is required. Free. Recommended ages: 3 - 5.

The Great Weedon Bird Quest

Join us on a quest to find Weedon Island Preserve birds! Learn the identifying marks and behaviors of our feathered year-round residents and seasonal visitors while helping us compile an annual checklist of the Preserve’s birds. These hikes are designed to take advantage of all levels of birding experience. Binoculars and bird guides are available. Hikes are scheduled for the second Friday of each month. Please join us for a relaxing morning outing led by experienced birders. Pre-registration is required for this free event. Recommended for adults.

Art Exhibit Opening – Marine Landscapes and Wildlife of Florida

C.W. Tanner, Artist, New Port Richey, FL

Brilliant underwater landscapes and wildlife scenes are the favorite subjects of artist C.W. Tanner. His fine oil paintings and limited edition prints are vivid and realistic, but with a touch of fantasy.  Join us for a chance to meet the artist and discuss his work at this special three-hour social. This exhibit is on display through September 30, 2010.

Florida Birds on Their Best Behavior

Tampa Bay is home to dozens of species of wading and water birds.  These birds have very distinct strategies for feeding, breeding and preening.  Many characteristic behaviors can be observed within just a few minutes of watching these birds.  This classroom presentation focuses on the behaviors and adaptations of many wading birds and other birds common to Weedon Island Preserve and Tampa Bay.   Photographs and specimens aid us as we discuss the natural history of these local residents. Pre-registration is required for this free presentation.  Recommended ages: 10 and up.   

Wee-time at Weedon: Harry Horseshoe Crab: A Tale of Crawly Creatures

This program is designed to introduce pre-school children to the wonders of the natural and cultural world. Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, children are treated to a variety of stories and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. This book presents Harry Horseshoe Crab: A Tale of Crawly Creatures by Suzanne Tate. Children learn many amazing facts about horseshoe crabs in this entertaining tale.  Pre-registration is required. Free. Recommended ages: 3 - 5.

Photography Hike

This program provides great opportunities for photographers of all levels to hone their skills. After a brief classroom session, participants hike the Preserve in search of that perfect shot. Center volunteers highlight seasonal features of the Preserve, as well as specific wildlife behaviors that help participants capture the natural beauty of Weedon Island Preserve. Free. Pre-registration is required.  Recommended for adults.

Open Classroom – Discover the Hidden World of Plankton with Your Child
Saturday, August 28, 2010       1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Come discover the hidden world of the estuary with some of the smallest critters that live in Tampa Bay. Our classroom will have live samples of plankton from Tampa Bay to examine and identify.  Plankton is a term that describes a diverse group of organisms that are suspended in the water of estuaries, oceans and all other bodies of water. Microscopes will help reveal these fascinating creatures which exhibit a wide variety of bizarre shapes and adaptations.  Activities are self-guided, just stop by our classroom anytime between 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm to participate.  Free. Recommended for ages 8 and up.


Monday - Friday Half-Day, Self-guided Tours
Launch Times: 11:30 am or 1:00 pm

Sweetwater Kayaks offers half-day (4-hour long) self-guided tours Monday through Friday. Reservations for the 11:30 am or 1:00 pm launch times are recommended. Please arrive at Sweetwater Kayaks 30 minutes before your reservation. Once payment and paperwork is complete, follow our staff to the Preserve and park your car in the main parking lot. Call Sweetwater Kayaks at (727) 570-4844 to reserve your kayak. 
Single Half-day Fee: $40
Double Half-day Fee: $56

Saturday and Sunday Half-Day, Self-guided Tours
Launch Times: 9:00 am or 12:30 pm

On weekends, Sweetwater Kayaks' self-guided, half-day tours are 3.5-hours long and launch at 11:30 am or 1:00 pm. Reservations are recommended. Meet us at Weedon Island Preserve at least 15 minutes before your reservation. Please park in the main parking lot. Call Sweetwater Kayaks at (727) 570-4844 to reserve your kayak. 
Single Half-day Fee: $40
Double Half-day Fee: $56

Daily Rentals
Launch Anytime: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Are you dealing with a busy schedule and only have time for a short paddle around Riviera Bay? Perhaps our hourly rentals are the best fit. Every weekend, kayaks and canoes are onsite at the Preserve for rental by the hour. To arrange a drop off during the week, call Sweetwater Kayaks at (727) 570-4844.
