Plan Ahead For Your Pet

Pinellas County pet owners now have new options when it comes to petfriendly emergency shelters. The Pinellas
County School Board and Pinellas County government recently added three pet-friendly shelter locations.

  • Oak Grove Middle School
    1370 S. Belcher Roa, Clearwater
  • Thurgood Marshall Middle School
    3901 22 Ave. S., St. Petersburg
  • Dunedin Middle School
    70 Patricia Ave., Dunedin

Family with PetEach of these facilities was selected because they are substantially-built, have large indoor gyms and separate air handlers to ensure the comfort and safety of allergic citizens who shelter there.

These new locations replace the old pet shelters in the Judicial Tower in St. Petersburg and the Palm Harbor White Chapel. Residents must register themselves and their pets for these pet-friendly shelters, as space is limited. Mobile home residents are given first priority. Call (727) 582-2150 or download a registration form here Adobe Acrobat Reader file or at www.pinellascounty.org/animalservices and return it to:

Animal shelters, such as Pinellas County Animal Services, the Humane Society and the SPCA, cannot accept your pets.

Don’t assume that a boarding kennel or hotel/motel will accept your pet. Check ahead and look for kennels in non-evacuation zones. For pet-friendly hotels/motels, call (727) 464-7200, the St. Petersburg/ Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau or check the following websites:

Facts

  • The evacuation and safety of your pets should be part of your hurricane
plan. In times of an emergency, kennel space is often unavailable and
most public shelters will not accept pets.
  • There are more than 100 times more pets than boarding kennel spaces in
    Pinellas County.
  • The Pinellas County Animal Services, the Humane Society and the SPCA
cannot accept your pets. These facilities need space to accept lost and
    injured animals after a disaster.
  • Check for pet-friendly hotels and motels before an evacuation by calling
The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau
    (727) 464-7200.

    when you will evacuate.
  • Ask friends or family living outside of evacuation areas if they can keep
    your pet.
  • Cat MicrochippedMake sure you have a collar and leash for keeping your pet under control.
  • Keep a pet carrier (portable kennel) for each pet – one that allows your pet to stand and turn around. The carrier should be marked with your pet’s identifi cation.

  • Make sure your pet has proper identifi cation with either a collar tag or a microchip implant. Have proof of current county-issued rabies vaccination available. A license is your pet’s ticket home. Download a Pet Identifi cation Form from the Animal Services website (www.pinellascounty.org/animalservices), under the heading Pet
Hurricane Planning. Fill out this form and adhere to your pet carrier
or kennel. This form will contain all needed information about your pet for
your stay at Pinellas County pet-friendly shelters.

Don'ts

  • Don’t assume a public shelter, animal shelter, boarding kennel or hotel/
motel will accept your pet. Check ahead.
  • Don’t leave your pets home when you evacuate. Your pet’s safety
cannot be assured. Flooding, structural damage or an extended length of
time away from your home can lead to the unnecessary death of your pet.

Horse NumberingWhat About Horses and Livestock?

Horses and livestock have a better chance for survival and reduced injury when turned out in clean pastures with native vegetation.

Walsingham Park at 12615 102nd Avenue North, in Largo, is a mid-county site for large animal evacuation. The park provides a perimeter fence, native vegetation, and available water. Bring proof of recent Coggins test with you to the evacuation site.

After A Storm

  • Walk pets on a leash until they become re-oriented to their home. Often, familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and pets could easily be confused and become lost.
  • Reptiles brought in with flood water and debris can pose a threat for animals after a disaster.
  • Bring along a picture of your pet for identifi cation.
  • After a disaster, animals can become aggressive or defensive. Monitor their behavior.
