Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held each Saturday of the month. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack for this two-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Reserve your space by 2 pm on the Friday prior to the hike. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Recommended ages: 6 and up.
Artist Opening Reception – “Just Landscapes”

Kevin Grass, Artist, Tarpon Springs, FL
A resident of Tarpon Springs, Kevin Grass is an accomplished artist with commissioned works ranging from portraits to landscapes. In this exhibit, Grass captures local spots of interest, including the scenic natural beauty of the area. Join us to meet the artist and discuss his unique work. Pre-registration is not required for this open reception. Visitors can enjoy this free exhibit during normal Center hours through December 31, 2009. Recommended for adults – suitable for children 12 and older.
In the Air

In the Air is a short documentary video that explores the impact of motor vehicle and power plant emissions and what can be done to reduce their imprint in the Tampa Bay region. Reducing emissions, which include pollutants and carbon, would improve the air we breathe. The video looks at health concerns as well as environmental issues. A discussion follows the film on progress now being made in the Tampa Bay area. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested. Recommended for adults.
Wee-time at Weedon: Nuts to You!

Introduce your pre-school child to the wonders of the natural world through story time fun. This week’s program presents Nuts to You! by Lois Ehlert. This story is about the busy world of a spirited squirrel and some of his antics. The program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. Registration for this free program is required. Best for children ages 3 - 5.
Amazing Osprey

Join us for a look at one of Florida’s most amazing birds, the Osprey. Pinellas County has the largest urban population of ospreys of any county in Florida. This talk explores some unusual nesting habits, migration patterns, and how biologists use satellite tracking to help understand this magnificent creature. Following the talk and over refreshments, we’ll share Oswald, an American Osprey, a delightful story written by Carol Hemingway. This event is free and open to the public. The People In Between: Tampa Bay Natives from Contact to Extinction

Archival research of primary European documents has resulted in remarkably detailed accounts about some of Florida’s last native inhabitants. While 16th century documentation broadly relates to the entire peninsula, some detailed information from the following centuries provides glimpses into native cultures of the Tampa Bay region. This program, co-sponsored by the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society, is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested. Recommended for adults.
Weedon Island Swamp Walk

Grab your water shoes and join us for a wet walk along the mangrove shoreline and tidal flats of Weedon Island Preserve. This hike is scheduled when the tide is low to provide great opportunities for discovering the inhabitants of mangrove swamps, mud flats, oyster reefs, and seagrass beds that surround the Preserve. Expect to walk in water and mud and, for safety reasons, wear closed-toed shoes. Come see what plants and animals are revealed at low tide. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Recommended for adults: suitable for ages 8 and up.
Life and Lunch in a 12th Century Florida Indian Village

Come join us for a taste of 12th century feasting in this intriguing program about food and daily life in a 12th century Manasota culture village on Tampa Bay. “Mac” Perry (McVae) discusses early Florida plant foods and preparation, foods introduced from the Old World, and the role of the village gatherer. Guests can share in sampling typical 12th century foods. This event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Recommended ages: 6 and up.

for the 11:30 am or 1:00 pm launch times are recommended.

complete, follow our staff to the Preserve and

our hourly rentals are the best fit. Every weekend,
kayaks and canoes are onsite at the Preserve for
