Bargain Offers
Carefully consider bargain offers that are based on purchases of additional merchandise. For example, “Buy One, Get One Free” or “Free Gift with Purchase.” If you don’t really want or need the item, it’s not a deal.
- Is Joining A Health Studio in Your Future?
Many consumers have resolved to lose weight or get in better shape this year. If that is on your agenda, you might consider joining a health club or gym. But, before you sign up for a club membership, take the time to carefully review the terms of the contract and become familiar with steps to protect your investment.
In Florida, health studios are required to register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and follow certain guidelines when conducting business. All contracts must be in writing and provide a penalty-free three day cancellation period. Many must also post a bond to protect club members in the event the studio goes out of business. Before entering into a health studio contract, consider the following tips:
- Call the Department's helpline at 1 800 HELP FLA (435-7352) to make sure the health studio is registered and to check its complaint history.
- Before signing up, visit the club during the hours you intend to use it to determine whether it is overcrowded.
- It’s important to be aware of any restrictions the club may have and ask questions to make sure you understand the terms of the membership contract.
- Do not allow yourself to be pressured into signing a contract that may not be financially feasible as some contracts can extend to 36 months.
- Remember to read your contract thoroughly and make sure you get all representations made to you by club personnel in writing.
