Our Mission is to provide protection for Pinellas County consumers in the marketplace and the business community against economic losses resulting from unethical or illegal business practices; to provide assistance for the resolution of consumer-business disputes; and to educate and inform the consumer and business communities of existing consumer protection laws.
The vast majority of businesses in Pinellas County provide quality services for consumers at reasonable prices. Inevitably, there are also some disreputable businesses which seek to prey on the unsuspecting.
What we do:
Pinellas County Consumer Protection provides high level assistance for local consumers in today's marketplace. Our primary services include dispute resolution, criminal investigation of consumer fraud, regulatory enforcement, and consumer education.
Our investigators work with consumers and businesses to help resolve complaints informally through dispute resolution.
Our investigators review complaints for possible violations of consumer protection laws. Our office works directly with the State Attorney's in investigating and referring consumer fraud cases for prosecution.
Our investigators provide regulation of county ordinances. Office responsibilities include enforcement of the Bingo, Towing, Adult Use, Fortune Tellers, Charity, Drug Paraphernalia, and Cremation Fees ordinances. The office proactively initiates investigations to address emerging trends and concerns, and, during an emergency, investigates complaints of price gouging.
- Our investigators provide outreach and educational opportunities for Pinellas County citizens in an attempt to prevent common consumer issues. From online safety for youth to consumer awareness and ID Theft, these presentations can be held throughout the community. Additionally, the Office proactively provides consumer information neighborhood events and expos to ensure the public has the information to make informed decisions on their purchases.
