Susan Latvala was elected to the Board of County Commissioners for Pinellas County in 2000 and was re-elected for a second term beginning November 2006. She was the 2004 Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. She previously served two (2) terms as a Member of the Pinellas County School Board being first elected in 1992 and re-elected in 1996.
Commissioner Latvala will represent the Board of County Commissioners as a member of Tampa Bay Water, the Area Agency on Aging for Pasco & Pinellas, the Pinellas County Arts Council, the School Transportation Safety Committee, the School Readiness Committee, the Juvenile Welfare Board and the Public Safety Coordinating Council. She was appointed to the statewide Substance Abuse and Mental Health Corporation, serves as Chairman of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Leadership Group in Pinellas County and was selected as a Vice State Director for the Florida Partners in Crisis Statewide Steering Committee. She is also President for the Florida Association of Counties and was named as the Chairman of the Statewide Water Policy Working Group and a member of the Environment, Energy and Land Use Steering Committee having been appointed to this committee representing the Florida Association of Counties as well as the National Association of Counties. Commissioner Latvala also served as a member of the Florida Chamber Water Task Force, the Elections Canvassing Board and was Chair of the Tourist Development Council in 2004.
She was formerly a member of the Board of Directors for the PACE Center for
Girls, Inc. and was appointed to the White House Conference on Youth, Drug Use and Violence, the Board of Directors of the National Conference on Community and Justice, the Florida Charter School Review Panel, Operation PAR and the Suncoast Family YMCA. Commissioner Latvala received the PACE Special Recognition Award from PEMHS (Personal Enrichment through Mental Health Services) in September of 2002 and the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000 presented by the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association.
Commissioner Latvala is a twenty-six year resident of Pinellas County and has been actively involved in the business community having been a real estate broker, owner of a property management company and later as a participant in a family business. She attended Western Kentucky University and Spencerian Business College.
