Room Addition Policy

The construction of an addition to an existing residential structure shall be required to comply with the Florida Building Code. Should the addition equal or exceeds 25 percent of the existing structure, the existing structure shall be required to meet the following requirements as well:

Electrical:

  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters and Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter protection shall be installed as prescribed by the NEC electrical service shall be a minimum of 100 amps.

Energy Code:

  • Must comply with Chapter 13 of the Florida Building Code.

Building:

  • Existing bedrooms must meet the egress requirement of Chapter 10 and smoke detectors shall be installed in compliance with Chapter 9.
