Physical Features
Coyotes have the general appearance of a small, scrawny German shepherd, but several distinct features distinguish them from dogs.
Coyotes:
• tend to be more slender than dogs
• have wide, pointed ears
• have a long, tapered muzzle
• have yellow eyes
• have slender legs
• have small feet
• have an uncurled, bushy tail which is carried low to the ground
• generally have coats that are a grizzled-grey or reddish gray color with a cream or white underside, although some individuals may have blonde or dark grey coats
• generally have a black-tipped tail with a black spot near the base of the spine
• typically weigh between 24 to 37 pounds
• typically measure 4 feet long from the nose to the tip of the tail and stand 15 to 20 inches at the shoulder
