The Pinellas County School District was named the 2011 Florida Green School Winner by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection. The district saved over $100,000 in disposal costs through their recycling efforts which resulted in one less day of trash pickup at 40 schools. Rebates from recycling exceeded $130,000. Last year, the schools recycled 2,112 tons of cardboard, 1,875 tons of paper, 466 tons of metals and 536,000 plastic bottles. School paper is collected and recycled for free by two members of the Pinellas Partners in Recycling: SP Recycling Corporation and the City of Clearwater. These recycling efforts are part of a broader initiative at the school district that includes energy and water conservation.
