This
Division is responsible for engineering the projects
described in Pinellas County's Stormwater Management
Plan. The Plan's purpose is to provide for the
orderly development of County drainage facilities,
to alleviate flooding of existing buildings and
to protect future development against potential
flood damage.
This
Division is also responsible for updating the
current "Stormwater Management Plan" to
incorporate the requirements of the Pinellas
County Comprehensive Plan. A critical component
of this plan is the improvement of water quality
through the reduction of pollutants to downstream
receiving waters. In carrying out these responsibilities
we respond daily to many inquiries from commercial
developers and the public. We are responsible
for engineering, design and preparation of
construction
plans for the Capital Improvement Projects in
surface water management, the Street Underdrain
Replacement Program, the Stormdrain Pipe Replacement
Program, and drainage pond enhancements. In
addition,
the Division assists in resolving problems identified
by the Highway Drainage Complaint Program,
coordinate
the permitting process for other Capital Improvement
Projects and manages the National Pollutant
Discharge
Elimination System (NPDES) Program for stormwater
runoff as required by the US Environmental
Protection
Agency. Finally, the Division is one of the local
custodians of the Flood Insurance Rate Maps
published
by Federal Emergency Management Agency.
