Current Penny for Pinellas
(2000 - 2010)
The
Penny for Pinellas was extended by county-wide
referendum on March 25, 1997 for another ten-year
period (February 1, 2000 through January 31,
2010). The tax was approved by 65%
of the voters. The Penny for Pinellas continues
to be the primary capital funding source and
is estimated to contribute 75% of the total
revenue mix supporting the Capital Improvement
Program (CIP).
Extending the Penny for Pinellas was estimated
to generate $1.36 billion over ten years. Approximately
half would be used for county projects with
the remainder allocated to the municipalities.
Allocation percentage between the County and
municipalities is formula based and is set over
the 10-year period.
Key
projects targeted by Pinellas County have included
major transportation projects, the acquisition
of endangered lands, improved park facilities,
improved safety through expansion and renovation
of existing facilities, and many surface water
management projects. These projects are the
County's "Priority Projects" to the
citizens of Pinellas.
