Project Description
The Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is developing a countywide bus rapid transit (BRT) plan to identify and prioritize corridors which will most likely support and benefit from BRT services. Bus rapid transit is premium public transportation service that combines many of the benefits of rail with the flexibility of buses by integrating different combinations of premium transit service elements such as:
- Operation in dedicated bus lanes, exclusive transitways, or mixed traffic lanes
- Attractive and easily accessible stations
- Quiet and comfortable vehicles
- Higher frequency and longer hours of service
- Simplified fare collection
- Advanced technologies to improve convenience, speed, reliability, and safety
In developing the Countywide BRT Plan, the MPO will screen all major corridors in the county based on a set of criteria that considers the potential for ridership, capital cost effectiveness, operating cost efficiency, economic development opportunities, and accessibility improvements. These corridors will be prioritized based on their potential to support and benefit from BRT services. Implementation plans, inc
luding preliminary cost estimates will be developed for the top two corridors.
