  Union Academy

Union AcademyThe Union Academy structure once stood on the grounds of the 1915 Union Academy in Tarpon Springs, one of the first "Negro schools" established in Pinellas County. It is believed to be one of the earliest surviving examples of the first portable classrooms, World War I surplus buildings known as “chicken coops.” Initially part of the Tarpon Springs Primary (Elementary) School, in 1942 it was moved to the Union Academy. Throughout its long history, it has also served as a community club for African Americans during the period when organizations such as the Boys Club excluded blacks because of their race.
