Project Description:
The proposed intersection improvements project consists of modifying the signal operation, lengthening the auxiliary turn lanes, eliminating the free flow right-turn lane on Virginia Ave. and reconstructing the traffic signal. The overall intersection improvements will result in an improved signal operation, accommodate pedestrian with crosswalks and allow traffic to move more efficiently. The sidewalk improvements will consist of adding continuous sidewalks, connections to transit stops, access for street crossings and ensure accessible facilities meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for both sides of the road along the project.Project Need:
This project supports the Pinellas County Strategic Plan which has been developed to enable the most efficient and effective use of public resources through five strategic goals that reflect the elements of sustainability. This project aligns with the following goals: 1. Ensure Public Health, Safety, and Welfare by enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety; and 2. Foster Continual Economic Growth and Vitality by investing in infrastructure to meet current and future needs of the community. In addition to creating safer streets for walking and biking, this project will address pedestrian safety compliance requirements to conform to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Project Funding:
The estimated cost of the intersection improvements at N. Hercules Ave. & Virginia Avenue is $712,000 and is funding entirely through the Infrastructure Sales Tax - Penny for Pinellas.
The estimated cost of the Hercules Ave. /Greenbriar Blvd. sidewalk improvement project is $1,418,284.50 and award awarded to Estep Construction, Inc. on June 21, 2016. It is co-funded by the Infrastructure Sales Tax (Penny for Pinellas and Local Agency Funding through the Florida Department of Transportation.
Project Schedule:
The intersection improvements at N. Hercules Ave. & Virginia Avenue are currently under construction and are estimated to be complete by late summer 2016.
The Hercules Ave. /Greenbriar Blvd. sidewalk improvement project is estimated to begin early fall 2016 and is expected to take a maximum of one year to complete.
