Environmental Lands Division

The Environmental Lands Division manages the County's Preserves and Management Areas. Our mission is to provide sound stewardship to the County's wild lands and opportunities for the appreciation of their intrinsic value. The Division is comprised of three sections: Education Services, Ecological Services, and Support Services. The Division Administrator is responsible for overall direction of the program. Each of the remaining three Sections are directed by a Program Coordinator. Offices for most of our staff are located at Brooker Creek Preserve near Tarpon Springs. The remaining staff members are located at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg.

The  Environmental Lands Division is the newest division within the Department of Environmental Management, established in 1998. Prior to that time, Weedon Island Preserve was managed by the County's Park Department. Brooker Creek Preserve was established by the Board of County Commissioners in 1991 and its first staff was hired in 1992 within the Department of Environmental Management. The Division was created by taking Weedon Island Preserve out of the Park Department and merging the staffs of both Preserves. Also at that time, additional County-owned lands were placed within the Division. Today, the Division is responsible for 19 separate Preserves and Management Areas, totaling more than 14,000 acres located throughout Pinellas County.
