The Clean Marina Program

(A Pinellas County, State of Florida and Marine Industry Partnership)

Pinellas County is known throughout the world as a premier tourist attraction. The constant sunshine, moderate temperatures, beautiful beaches, warm water, and year-round swimming, diving, boating and recreational fishing provide tourists and residents with abundant and diverse recreational opportunities. The pleasant local environment is why most of us live here and it is the backbone of our local economy!

In an effort to protect and promote our local resources Pinellas County, the State of Florida and the Marine Industry have entered into a partnership to raise awareness and promote more environmentally responsible boating and marina operations.

The Clean Marina Program assists our participating marina communities to become more environmentally responsible in the management of litter and debris, oil and fuel, sewage, chemicals, and stormwater runoff.

Good News For Boaters

The Clean Marina Program offers public education through published materials, seminars, and activities, making it easier for all good boaters to protect our waterways and marine life from pollution.

Participating boaters and marina staff learn:

  • how to prevent pollution of our water
  • how to comply with environmental rules and regulations
  • how to identify environmentally-friendly marinas
  • how to respond to pollution violations and emergency situations

Good News for Marinas

Participating marinas receive technical assistance to help them protect their local environment, improve public services, and meet the standards that will provide them with a "Clean Marina" designation.

Specialized training and materials help marinas establish and improve:

  • fueling centers
  • solid waste collection systems
  • maintenance and facility operations

Marina staff receive information and training on:

  • signage directing boaters to recycling services at marina facilities
  • preventing oil, fuel and sewage discharges
  • safe boating products

Each Pinellas County marina accepted into the program receives:

  • a "Clean Marina" flag they can fly proudly from their flagpole
  • a sign indicating that the marina is certified as a "Clean Marina"
  • local and state recognition (listing on State and County websites, public service announcements, press releases, etc.)
