Manatee Maps & Data (requirements)
In 1992, the Pinellas County Manatee Watch Line was first activated. This program tracks information regarding manatee sightings in Pinellas County waters reported by the public. The Watch Line logs an average of 450 reported sightings per year. Calls have been received from Pinellas County residents as well as tourists visiting from other states and countries, and it appears that the program is helping to raise awareness that manatees are in Pinellas County waters. This information is not considered "true scientific data" but has proven critical in identifying locations in the County that are frequented by manatees.
Users can now visualize manatee usage throughout Pinellas County waters by accessing the County GIS mapping system. The user can identify the number of manatees in an area by clicking on an area of the Pinellas County map or by entering an address near the location of interest. The map will display the number of manatees in that location reported by citizens since 1992.
The information can also be displayed in a spreadsheet. By entering specific information the user can access the raw data.
