Environmental Lands Division

The Environmental Lands Division manages the County's Preserves and Management Areas. Our mission is to provide sound stewardship to the County's wild lands and opportunities for the appreciation of their intrinsic value. The Division is comprised of three sections: Ecological Services, Education Services, and Support Services. The Division Administrator is responsible for overall direction of the program. Each section, in turn, is directed by a Program Coordinator. Offices for most of our staff are located at Brooker Creek Preserve near Tarpon Springs. The remaining staff members are located at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg.

Established in 1998, the Environmental Lands Division is the newest division within the Department of Environmental Management. Prior to that time, Weedon Island Preserve was managed by the County's Park Department. Brooker Creek Preserve was established by the Board of County Commissioners in 1991 and its first staff was hired in 1992 within the Department of Environmental Management. The Division was created by removing Weedon Island Preserve from the Park Department and merging the staffs of both Preserves. Also at that time, additional County-owned lands and waterways were placed within the Division. Today, the Division is responsible for 19 separate Preserves and Management Areas, totaling more than 15,000 acres located throughout Pinellas County.
