Hiking Trails at Brooker Creek Preserve

Brooker Creek Preserve offers two areas for nature hiking. The “Wildlands Hiking Trails” are located near the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center. The "Friends Trail” is located at the south end of Lora Lane. (See status of trails below.)

General Trail Rules

  • For the protection of the Preserve, these trails are for hikers only.  No pets or bikes are allowed on hiking trails.
  • Hiking trails open daily from 7:00 am to 1 hour before sunset.

About Our Trails

Photograph of trail signs.

To minimize impacts to the Preserve, many of the hiking trails follow old existing jeep trails and plow lines.  Consequently, portions of the trails are below grade (lower than the surrounding land).  These low portions tend to hold water and hikers may encounter standing water, even during the dry season.  As part of a long-term project, we are working to bring all low trails back up to grade.

The hiking trails will remain in a natural state to minimize the impact of our presence in this area.  We recommend all hikers wear sturdy, close-toed shoes when hiking.  Elevated boardwalks over wet areas are provided only on the Ed Center Trail.

Trail Closures

Portions of the trails may be closed temporarily due to excessively high standing water, high wildfire danger or prescribed burns.  Please consult the trail status chart below or call us at (727) 453-6900, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for an update.

The Friends Trail

Visitors will enjoy getting back to nature along this 1.75 mile, self-interpretive hiking trail.  This natural path takes hikers through pine flatwood communities, past swamp restoration area, and eventually to the banks of Brooker Creek.
