  • December 6, 2004 - The dredging operation has been down since the last update.  Rough seas damaged the Vicksburg.  The equipment is being repaired, and construction will commence as soon as the weather is favorable.  Due to frequent cold fronts this time of year, please do not be alarmed when construction proceeds slowly with frequent shut downs.
  • November 16, 2005 - The unloader and associated barges offshore of Sand Key were demobilized temporarily due to rough seas. Expect this to occur periodically throughout the winter. Dredging operations will restart once the weather dies down.
  • November 1, 2005 - Renourishment begins!  Sand pumping began at the Cabana Club and Dan's Island on Sand Key. Barges full of sand are pushed by tugboats to the "Vicksburg", sitting one mile offshore of the beach. The Vicksburg is an unloader. It sucks sand out of the barges and pumps them through a submerged pipeline to the beach. A large cage at the end of the discharge pipe traps rocks and large shells. That way, the new sand will be free of large debris.
  • October 27, 2005 - The passage of Hurricane Wilma delayed the start of work by one week. Nearshore pipeline placement is beginning at Dan's Island (R60A) in Sand Key.  Expect renourishment to begin by the second week of November.
  • October 4, 2005 - Transport of the dredge and other equipment (mobilization) has been delayed due to the numerous hurricanes and tropical storms affecting the country. Dredging will begin in late October 2005.  The pier remnants at 1480 Gulf Blvd will be removed on October 11-12.
  • September 2, 2005 -The Morgan Street public access in Belleair Beach will be closed for approximately 3 months. The park will be used as a staging area for construction equipment and an office trailer. Local improvements will follow.

The first pipeline “landing” will come ashore near Dan’s Island in the Sand Key section of Clearwater. Nourishment will first proceed north to the Crescent Beach Club, and then south to the Belleair Beach/Belleair Shore line. This north segment, Sand Key and Belleair Beach, will take about 3 months to complete.
