Renourishment was completed on August 14, 2006.

The contract to construct the 2005 Sand Key Beach Renourishment was awarded on July 23, 2005. The project placed 2 million cubic yards of sand along nearly 9 miles of the island of Sand Key. Sand Key is the barrier island that stretches from Clearwater Pass to John’s Pass. The renourishment project placed sand from the “Sand Key” portion of Clearwater south to the Tides in North Redington Beach. The project area includes the communities of Sand Key (Clearwater), Belleair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Shores and North Redington Beach. The project does not include Belleair Shores due to the lack of public access there. Sand was dredged from Egmont Shoals, just offshore of the entrance to Tampa Bay and north of Egmont Key. View the Construction Log.

The first four phases of this project were constructed in 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1998-99. Those nourishment projects created a recreational beach that also provides storm protection. Many parts of Sand Key had no beach in the early 1980's! Compare photos from before and after nourishment.
