Central Lealman

Lealman (map) is a large unincorporated community that started as a small settlement in a mostly rural county at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. This settlement was connected to the rest of the world by a few dirt roads and the railroad. Today, the railroad bisects an urban community of roughly 7,870 people known as Central Lealman - an area bounded by 34th Street, 62nd Avenue North, 49th Street and 40th Avenue North. The residents, property owners, and businesses of Central Lealman have come together to identify what they want to see Central Lealman become in the future. This "Vision" that was incorporated in the document, "A Revitalization Plan for the Lealman Community" was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on July 17, 2001.

Various components of the "Vision" such as Community Identity have been achieved with installation of "Welcome To Lealman" markers along the outer edges of the community. These markers help residents and visitors know they are in Lealman. Efforts on the part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have assisted in this identity as well. The Lealman name has been placed on newly erected signs along the I-275 corridor.

Other components identified in the "Vision" include improving the community's character, appearance, sense of community, economic and business development, recreation and greenspace, services, safety and infrastructure. With the assistance of County staff and administration Lealman will become an attractive, safe and desirable community for its residents and businesses.
