Commissioners have been gathering public input regarding a proposed parking ordinance for unincorporated residential areas.
An ordinance was drafted based on recommendations from a Code Enforcement Task Force of citizens.
Public
informational meetings were held in early March
to collect citizen comments. On May 3, 2005,
Pinellas County officials presented the results
of the three Voice Your Choice meetings concerning
a proposed ordinance restricting the yard-parking
of boats, RVs and automobiles in unincorporated
neighborhoods. The results of surveys gathered
at those meetings indicated that most residents
preferred to keep the code enforcement ordinance
as is, and staff recommended that new proposal
not be adopted. The board agreed with this
recommendation.
While
the commission accepted these findings, they
have asked that staff
explore ways of establishing special, more
restrictive neighborhood “overlays” at the
request of those residents within those communities.
This would regulate yard parking of boats,
RVs and other vehicles in certain geographic
areas only, and only at the request of the
residents who live there. Also, the county
is considering requiring all boat owners
to maintain up-to-date registrations on their
boats and trailers to help deter the storage
of inoperable or immovable vessels in residential
areas. The matter will be further discussed
by the Board of County Commissioners at a
special
workshop to be held 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Thursday,
June 2.
